Oups!!!

My new job is o.k. I was supposed to work from 15:00 untill 23:00 but the head of reception is gone for a few days due to trouble in the family (and a little bit of rest because she was feeling burned out) and I was left on my own doing the hard staff like expecting 60 guests at a time (damn Viaggi and Kompas! Couldn't they pick different days for their flights!)

Naturally chaos follows soon after. I misplaced a couple of guests They should go to room 322 and instead got 332 (oups). Also I "received" a document about goods that were supposed to be delivered in the kitchen but never showed up there. The thing is when you sign that you actually received goods you can't blame the supplier for not getting them. And they were actually delivered but not to the usual place, so after a fewtelephone calls and little bit of searching the goods were retrieved. Naturally afterwards I got reprimanded and was told never to do that again.

Anyway the manager said that the problem lies in me not asking for help when things go weird,because I'm not expected to do everything but ask for assistance whenever I can't handle something.

Well after 14 hours (oh yes, I've been on my post from 7:00 untill 21:00) I went home. That was yesterday.

Today bump was even bigger. A guy (who has caused problems before by telling us that we threw away his newspapers when in fact his wife had misplaced them), came and asked for his and his wife's passports because he was checking out today. My colleague searched for them in his pigeon hole wherewe keep the keys but they weren't there so hetold him that we didn't have and he should search his room again. The guy insisted the receptionist looked for them again but to no avail so the guy left and said he would look for them again in his room. That was quite early and he didn't come back. The receptionist told me this quite casually. I asked him whether I should search myself but he said that he looked everywhere all night and the guy didn't come back any way so he probably got them. 45 minutes before his departures he shows up again telling me that he still hasn't got his passport and he needs them to check out. I immediately tell the manager and he comes and start looking for the damn documents himself. Here is the crusial point: I don't exactly recall if I told him that I looked for them myself or whether I just told him about the other receptionist's search. I wanted to be quick, the other time I was told that I shouldn't try to deal with things like that myself but should contact him immediately.

Anyway the passports weren't where they where supposed to be and fortunately the guy was from Europe so he could leave the country without his passports using his ID card or his driver's licence. And about six hours later I FOUND THEM!

They were placed on a different pigeon hole and we simply didn't notice. Every passport we get, we label it with a little sticker saying the room number so that we can always put it in the right pigeon hole. Aparently other hotels use that system and the passport had another sticker with a different number on. When we looked for it we checked the stickers not the pictures/names of the people inside the passports hence the mistake.

I told the boss of my findings, I got yelled at, and then contacted the travel agency whotold me to just mail it to them (he had left his address) which we will do.

I haven't seen the boss yet (I will see him tommorow morning) to hear his verdict on the matter. I don't think that I am responsible for this mix - up except that I should have saerched for the passports the moment the night receptionist told me what happened. I should have gone through each and every single one. But he made the whole thing sound so casual that I simply didn't pay attention.

Afroditi - Venus Hotel

So I am still in Santorini. This is my seventh day in my new job as a receptionist in the hotel Afroditi - Venus. It's not nearly as luxurious as Mystique but it's more of my kind of hotel.

I work from 15:00 to 23:00 (without any exceptions) and so far things are ok. The difference (apart from the paycheck) is that things are more relaxed. Nobody expects me to know everything and the customers are more understanding.

There are the usual problems that occur in every hotel (mainly power shortages) but the way people responds to them is very different. For example:

Reception:
I'm sorry for the inconvenience but the power shortage is general in Santorini.
Guest of Afroditi:
It's because of the oveload of the system right? Oh well it will pass ...
Guest of Mystique:
What do you mean that the island has no powe? What are you doing about it? Where is your generator? I'm paying a lot of money to have a stress free vacation and this is not stress free. I want to speak with the manager, I want free nights, I'm sending a complain to Starwoods, Your service sucks.

Reception:
What can I do for you?
Guest of Afroditi:
I would like a taxi please.
Receptionist:
I'm afraid nothing is available at the moment. Would you like me to try again later?
Guest of Afroditi:
Yes please.

Reception:
What can I do for you?
Guest of Mystique:
I would like a taxi.
Receptionist:
I'm afraid nothing is available at the moment. Would you like me to try again later?
Guest of Mystique:
What do you mean that nothing is available? There arte dozens of taxis on the island, Surely you can get me one. This has never happened to me before. Your attitude is not up to Starwood standarts. Where is the manager? I wish to file a complain. I am not satisfied at all.

Of course they are right. Mystique is charging outrageous amounts of money. The salary is better and there are tips and commisions that might double your paycheck but I can't do what's required of me. At least not yet. Things are simplier in Afrodity - Venus. It's just a typical reception (exactly what I was looking for).

The most major screw up (that the reception is responsible) was the loss or more likely the missplacement of a guest's passport. It was a joint mistake and not something I did all by myself and the guest's reaction was the following:

At first when he realised that the passport was missing he was upset. He wanted to talk to the manager who told us to "Look for the damned thing. It's there somewhere" and then when we did discover where it went (some other guest had taken it by accident) and took it to his room he was relieved and said that things like that happen (!?!?). We also called his rep who said "Don't panic, if the passport is actually lost, we'll just inform the authorities and he will get a new one" (?!?!?)

If something like that had happened to Mystique, the manager would have cut me to pieces and threw me at the volcano. I don't know if the guest will let things pass (he probably doen't think of the world for Afroditi's service right now) but nothing very dramatic happened. So everything is ok for now.

Good news + Bad news

I got laid of work in Mystique at 18/6/2007 and haven't been near an internet connection ever since then. I was completely stressed and unhappy at my previous job because it required experience that I didn't have. Let me explain. Mystique is a high profile resort. You can tell by the prices of the rooms (500, 700, 1500 per night!). When people pay that kind of money they expect service the likes of which you can only imagine. They expect to cought and everything will magically happen like plane tickets 3 hours before take off and dinner reservations at the coolest hippest place in Santorini on a Saturday night with only 30 minutes prior notice!

Other people (more experienced who have done this job for years) have managed to do that or if they fail they manage to cover things up in such a way as not to make the guests mad. These people don't accept "No" as an answer. I am not good at this. I can't cover things up and I have the tendency of being too honest and not able to deal with pissed off people. As a result I made mistakes. Small mistakes to be sure but in such a hight profile hotel they are unacceptable.

For example I forgot to notify the porter and the guest waited for his luggage 30 minutes, or I failed to book a certain cruise for another guest (because the cruise ship was overbooked) and then didn't notify him the same day so he assumed that it was my fault that he didn't go.

The thing is once a make a mistake I can't put it behind me. I think about it all the times and I worry so much on not repeating it that I don't concetrate on the job at hand and as a result I do something else wrong. I noticed that on my "good days" everything goes on fine and on my "bad days" I don't just do one thing wrong but many.

The manager (a very nice woman whom I would like to have as a friend by the way) got yelled at by the guests and then I got yelled at by her. I don't blame her at all. Like I said I didn't go anywhere (thinking that maybe if I got rested I would do better next day) and I didn't have any friends here to talk to and I was feeling really lousy.

I tried to keep it from my parents (my dad can't handle anxiety either. He had rocks in his kidneys because of it and had to be operated) but they figured it out. I was always the serious and composed child in my family and my parents (and myself) had expectations from me that I felt I couldn't meet. You are right that there is a time that you don't know what you wanna do with your life and you look for what is appropriate for you but that time is usually 18 not 28 like me. I feel that I am slow and left behind. My parents support me all the way and I mean both financially (I don't have the means to live by myself) and emotionally. Once my dad was feeling better he came to Santorini to cheer me up and take me home.

The thing is I really like Santorini. And I reaaly like working in the reception and if that particular position wasn't so demanding (it wasn't a simple receptionist they were looking for. They wanted someone who could be conciers, front office manager and guest relation personell and to be really really good at it) I would have been just fine. At least that's what I like to believe.

This new job I got is a hotel receptionist but it's just that. My duties will be to check the guests (register their passports in the system), check them out and give them their keys. Occasionally I will have to deliver messages from their travel agencies or call them or call them a cab or giver them a wake up call but basically that is that. No more running around. Today is my third day at this job. So far I haven't done a whole shift by myself because I am still a trainee but I will be on my own soon. My shift will be from 15:00 to 23:00 every day (no more working late because the day is too busy). I thought about this hard. On one hand I might not be cut out for this job but on the other I really like it here and I don't feel comfortable going home. I don't want this experience to be "one more thing that I tried and wasn't good at" so I quit. I have a clear mind thought. If I really suck at this as well then it's not the end of the world. I will simply come home. So in the spirit of "getting back on the horse once you fall" I decided to give it another try. It helped that the other woman who works there used to have my old job at Mystique's sister hotel "Vedema" and knew what I was going through and why I left (she did the same thing about a year ago).

To all the people I should have phoned: I'm sorry. I promise I will make it up to you. Lately I have been feeling really depressed and wouldn't know what to say if I picked up the phone.

Things are looking up ...

The weather in Santorini hasn’t been very good lately, so the guests, who were lured here by the promises of wonderful sunshines and amazing sunsets, found themselves confined to their suites and were very edgy. They started noticing all sorts of unimportant details that normally, if the weather was fine and were enjoying their cruises or walks, they wouldn’t notice at all.

Thankfully the weather has improved and many of the amenities that the hotel should have but didn’t because they haven’t been shipped/ordered/bought yet are now available. So the complaining customers are now less. We no longer offer them free nights as compensations. I also feel that I am getting the hang of it. Things are quiet now and everybody is less tired and calmer as well.

I did a major flomp on Wednesday the 23rd. I was supposed to arrange for transfer for a certain couple and I didn’t. The circumstances made this particular mistake inexcusable. These people had been in and out of the reception office all morning and yet I forgot to call the driver when it was time for them to be picked up. Everybody went ballistic. On a scale of dissastroufulness from 1 to 10 this felt like a 15.

The hotel manager, Antonia was not only furious but close to tears and the owner/boss had to drive them herself. Needless to say I have lost her favor there and then (not that I had it in the first place). Ever since every word she ever utters to me is to correct me and at the same time makes me feel like I’m four. I suppose it serves me right up to a point. I really wished she got over it thought. Other than that I haven’t made any other huge mistakes and that’s a relief.

The hotel was inspected by Starwood and we passed the test (yupee!!!), so that’s one less thing to worry about.

I run out of money and need to go to the bank to make a withdraw. Unfortunately the bank is closed on Monday, it’s a holiday so I guess that leaves Tuesday. I lost my ATM card a few days before moving to Santorini. That’s a mixed blessing. On one hand my life is somewhat more difficult without it. I need to take a whole trip to a different village in order to find a bank. On the other hand it’s a good thing too because I would probably had spent a lot more otherwise.

I can’t believe how expensive things are here. I spend 200 euros on food and necessities in less than 15 days. I really wanted to watch “Pirates of the Caribbean III” and I guess I still have the chance, I just need to arrange the schedule with my colleague.

So far so good …

Santorini: Good news & Bad news

Well this is my second post about my job in Santorini and I have to declare these:

Being a receptionist is much more difficult than what it seems. I have a small expoerience in that section but nothing like that. The hotel I'm working for is a high profile establishment (Starwoods Hotels) with dozens of rules and standarts about how the hotel should operate and what we can and can't do. I'm always worried I'm going to brake one or two and get in trouble.

This job turns out to be harder and more challenging but at the same time I really like it there. The manager is a very nice and friendly girl with tons of understanding. The thing is we (me and the other receptionist) are totally inexperienced and quite frankly I don't get how we got the job in the first place. My quess is they waited untill the very last minute to find personel and so they had to make do with whoever was available. That is very good for me, because I'm learning a lot of new things and my time in this hotel is something that will look good on my resume, but I' m afraid it's not so good for them.

We received some training in a program called FIDELIO, (very famous in the hotel industry). Sixteen hours to be precise that was hardly enought but time was of the essence. We've been given a few simple instructions and that was it. Naturally when the time came I wasn't ready and neither was the other girl. That was on the 15th of this month. Things weren't looking up and the manager and her supervisor decided that we needed some more training. That's both good and bad. It's good because I feel confident that with a little bit more guidence and supervision we will both improve. I most definitely will. I need someone to show me the ropes and I've been told I'm a slow learner.

But at the same time it's bad, because it means that our performance so far is seriously lacking. F we could do what we were hired to do we wouldn't be needing any more training, would we? I really wish I was a star emploee but it's painfully obvious that I'm not. Anyway, I really like this job, I want to be good and not suck at it. And I will. On the bright side I received my first tip for this season: 10 euros. It's not much but at least it's an indication that I'm not totaly hopeless.

Another thing that is trobling is that the hotel was not really ready to accept guest yet. The facility is simply not ready. There are dozens of small technical problems that crop up every day. So far every guest has some sort of complain and the complimentary dinners and cuts in the prices of the rooms in order to apease the unsatissfied guest are a daily phenomenon. Today is the first day that we haven't heard any complains, but of course I left at four in the afternoon. The hotel has only 18 suites and it will be full tommorow. Hopefully things will improve and whatever needs fixing will be fixed and whatever needs doing will be done soon and we won't have any more unsatisfied guests.

I moved to Santorini

My posts about my adventures in the island will be posted in English because I want to share my news with my internet friends who are not all Greeks.

I have moved to Santorini at Friday 11/5/2007 and will stay there until 15/11/2007. I work as a receptionist in a hotel. Although I have worked as a receptionist before this is very different. It's a high profile hotel and there are a hundred things I have to remember. I hope I will get the hang of it soon.

The prices here are outrageous! One hour at an internet cafe costs 10 euros. These past few days I have been extremely busy. The hotel is very new this is the first season of operations, and although it opened it's doors on the 15th, there are still a million things left to do in order to make the rooms available, and no time to do them. All the managers/owners are running like crazy, there is a lot of aggravation and everyone is dog tired.

In the arrangement they agreed to provide food and boarding so at least I don't have to worry about that. I live with two other girls, one of them is a receptionist like me and the other one works in the kitchen. They seem nice but I don't really know them that well yet. Also we get to wear uniforms, white trousers (very unforgiving), white shirt and a light brown jacket. However the shirts haven’t arrived yet so we use our own clothes, and I had to buy shoes, white flats with no decorations. I did manage to find a suitable pair in Fira, so that’s one thing less to do on my checklist.

Among the many regulations is: no jewellery and very discreet make up. I always thought that my make up and jewellery were very discreet but I was wrong. I guess you are the last one to know these things.

I am using the computer at my work and my boss doesn't know it because she is not here yet. My internet time will be very limited from now on, but I will try to ad posts from time to time to tell how things are going for me.

Η όλη προσπάθεια είναι ερασιτεχνική. Δηλαδή κάποια στιγμή ο κύριος Michael Hart και τα φιλαράκια του βρήκαν βιβλία που έχουν λήξει τα πνευματικά τους δικαιώματα, τα μετέτρεψαν σε .txt και .html και μερικά άλλα format και τα μοίρασαν στο κόσμο. Στην πορεία βρήκαν και άλλους εθελοντές που αποφάσισαν να τον βοηθήσουν. Άρχισαν να βρίσκουν βιβλία που έχουν λήξει τα πνευματικά τους δικαιώματα και βιβλίο το βιβλίο έφτασαν τα 20.000 (και 20.000.000 downloads το μήνα).

Τα βιβλία διατίθονται δωρεάν και είναι νόμιμα! Το 2006 η εταιρεία συγχωνευτικε με την Distributed Proofreaders που αποτελείται απο εθελοντές που δημιουργούν τα ηλεκτρονικά βιβλία που διαθέτει το Project Gutenberg. Η διαδικασία είναι σχετικά απλή.

1ον Κάποιος εθελοντής βρίσκει ένα βιβλίο που τα δικαιώματά του έχουν λήξει.
2ον Το περνάει απο skanner.
3ον Στέλνει το βιβλίο στους υπευθυνους.
4ον Εαν πληρεί τις προυποθέσεις αρχίζει το proof reading

Δηλαδή το μηχάνημα που κάνει την μεταφορά απο το προτότυπο σε .txt κάνει μερικά λάθη, παραλήψεις κτλ που τα διορθώνουν οι εθελοντές με την γνωστή πατροπαράδοτη μέθοδο (σύγκριση σκαναρισμένης σελίδας με κείμενο). Τέλος το βιβλίο διατίθεται απο το site.

Εν τω μεταξύ κόβετε τα πνευμόνια , τα συκώτια, τα γλυκάδια σε κομμάτια που να μπορούν να περαστούν από την σούβλα σας, ούτε πολύ μικρά ούτε πολύ μεγάλα

Τα βάζετε και αυτά σε μία λεκάνη με αλάτι, πιπέρι και ρίγανη και τα βάζετε όλη τη μέρα στο ψυγείο

Το chic - lit

Τι είναι το chic - lit? Ένα λογοτεχνικό είδος που άνθησε απο το 90'ς και έπειτα. Στα συγκεκριμένο είδος μια ηρωϊδα ηλικίας απο 20 εως 30 ή 35 ετών περνάει κάποιες δύσκολες στιγμές είτε στον επαγγελματικό στίβο (η δουλειά της είναι απαίσια και χωρίς προοπτικές) είτε στον ερωτικό στίβο (συνήθως είναι μόνη) είτε ταυτόχρονα και καλείται να τις αντιμετωπίσει.

Χαρακτηριστικά παραδείγματα τέτοιου είδους είναι το "Ημερολόγιο της Μπρίτζετ Τζοουνς" και "Ο διάβολος φοράει Prada". Το γεγονός οτι και τα δύο βιβλία έγιναν best sellers, και μετά υπερ επιτυχημένες ταινίες, δεν είναι τυχαίο.

Το είδος εκπροσωπείται κατα κύριο λόγο απο γυναίκες συγγραφείς και έχει κατα κύριο λόγο γυναίκες αναγνώστες. Η διαφορά του απο τα "Αρλεκιν" της δεκαετίας του 80 είναι πως η ηρωϊδα είναι μια πραγματική γυναίκα με πραγματικά προβλήματα και ο έρωτας είναι μόνο ένα απο αυτά αντί για το μοναδικό όπως στο προηγούμενο είδος. Επίσης οι ηρωϊδες των chic lit είναι ποικιλόμορφες (νεές ή όχι και τόσο, μητέρες ή άτεκνες, αποκατεστημένες επαγγελματικά ή όχι, μόνες ή ζευγαρωμένες) είναι δηλαδή οι κοπέλες της διπλανής πόρτας και όχι οι τέλειες Barbie των Άρλεκιν. Το ίδιο ισχύει και για τους ήρωες, σε καμία περίπτωση δεν θα μπορούσαν να χαρακτηριστούν "πριγκιπες των παραμυθιών". Είναι γεμάτοι φοβίες και ελατώματα όπως όλοι μας. Και εδώ εξηγήται η επιτυχία αυτών των μυθιστορημάτων. Μπορεί οι ηρωϊδες να μην έχουν βαθυστόχαστα προβλήματα αλλά είναι προβλήματα που αντιμετωπίζουν οι γυναίκες καθημερινά (π.χ. να μην έχουν να πληρώσουν το νοίκι, να νιώθουν μοναξιά, να τις πρήζει το αφεντικό τους). Και έτσι είναι ευκολο να ταυτιστεί κανείς μαζί τους. Οι καταστάσεις στις οποίες εμπλέκονται δεν είναι εξωπραγματικές και τα πάθη τους δεν είναι ακραία (η Αννα Καρέννινα μς τελείωσε) αλλά ακριβώς γι' αυτό είναι αξιαγάπητες. Οι σύγρονες γυναίκες μπορούν ανετότατα να ταυτιστούν με την Μπρίτζετ (ποιά γυναίκα δεν νιώθει οτι θα μπορούσε να βελτιωθεί η εμφάνισή της?) ή την Άντρεα (ποιά γυναίκα δεν βρήκε ομοιότητες του αφεντικού της με τον διάβολο της ταινίας?) αλλά είναι λίγο δύσκολο να καταλάβει την Άννα Καρέννινα (σιγά μην αυτοκτονήσουμε κιόλας).

Το είδος χαρακτηρίζεται και απο τα happy end. Τις περισσότερες φορές η ηρωϊδα έχει "ωριμάσει" έχει ανακαλύψει κάτι για τον εαυτό της και έχει κερδίσει το σπίτι/δουλειά/σύντροφο των ονείρων της. Όμως για να το κατακήσει αυτό πρέπει να περάσει μια φάση αυτογνωσίας και κατανόησης του εαυτού της για να κατακτήσει τελικά τον στόχο της. Τίποτα δεν της χαρίζεται. Κάπως κλισέ αλλά πάντα επίκαιρο. Κάπου βαθιά μέσα μας όλες οι γυναίκες αναζητούμε το ευτυχισμένο τέλος, την ηρεμία ύστερα απο την καταιγίδα, που σε αντίθεση με τα παλαιότερα "Άρλεκιν" δεν είναι πάντα ο γάμος ή η τέλεια σχέση αλλά μια περίοδος όπου οι δύσκολες επιλογές έχουν πλέον παρέλθει και το μέλλον διαγράφεται ρόδινο. Δεν υπάρχει ούτε ένας άνθρωπος με σώας τας φρένας που να μην το ονειρεύται αυτό. Κι ας ξέρουν όλοι οτι αυτό δεν γίνεται.

Απο αυτήν την οπτική γωνία ίσως τα μυθιστορήματα της πεντάρας να μην είναι τελικά της πεντάρας και να αξίζουν λίγο περισσότερο σεβασμό και προσοχή.

Μια επικίνδυνη μειονότητα: Οι ρατσιστές

Εγώ δεν είμαι ρατσιστής, διότι ούτε στην ΚΟΥ - ΚΛΟΥΞ - ΚΛΑΝ οργανώθηκα, ούτε Εβραίους σκότωνα στο Αουσβιτς ...

... Μόνο που ρατσισμός δεν είναι μόνο αυτό. Όπως ορίζει ο νόμος 3304/2005 του ελληνικού κράτους: "Ρατσισμός είναι κάθε διάκριση λόγω φυλετικής ή εθνοτικής καταγωγής, θρησκευτικών ή άλλων πεποιθήσεων, αναπηρίας, ηλικίας ή γενετήσιου προσανατολισμού. Ως διάκριση εννοείται η παρενόχληση ή κάθε άλλη προσβλητική ενέργεια, η οποία σχετίζεται με έναν απο τους παραπάνω λόγους και έχει ως σκοπό ή αποτέλεσμα την προσβολή της αξιοπρέπειας κάποιου προσώπου και τη δημιουργεία εκφοβιστικού, εχθρικού ή εξευτελιστικού, ταπεινοτικού ή επιθετικού περιβάλλοντος. Ως διάκριση εννοείται επίσης οποιαδήποτε εντολή για την εφαρμογή διακριτικής μεταχείρισης σε βάρος προσώπου για οποιονδήποτε απο τους παραπάνω λόγους."

Κοίτα εγώ δεν είμαι ρατσιστής, αλλά ... οι ξένοι παίρνουν τις δουλειές μας.
Αυτό είναι ένας μεγάλος μύθος. Τελευταία μελέτη της Ευρωπαϊκής Επιτροπής αποδεικνύει οτι δεν υπάρχει συσχέτιση μεταξύ αυξησης των μεταναστευτικών ροών και αύξησης της ανεργίας. Οι μετανάστες δεν υποκατέστησαν θέσεις εργασίας εργαζομένων στις χώρες υποδοχής, αλλά κάλυψαν κενά που ήδη υπήρχαν. Η συμβολή τους μάλιστε σε πολλούς τομείς είναι σημαντική. Η απασχόληση τους π.χ. στον αγροτικό τομέα, δημιούργησε θετικά αποτελέσματα για τους Έλληνες αγρότες. Πολλές αγροτικές περιοχές της χώρας μας στηρίζονται σε μεγάλο βαθμό στην παρουσία ξένων εργατών. Στον αστικό τομέα της οικονομίας (μεταποίηση, κατασκευές, εμπόριο, κτλ.), οι περισσότεροι εργάζονται ως ανειδίκευτοι εργάτες, αναλαμβάνοντας δουλειές που δεν καλύπτονται απο το υπάρχον εργατικό δυναμικό.

Εγώ δεν είμαι ρατσιστής, αλλά το κακό με τους ξένους έχει παραγίνει. Όλη η εγκληματικότητα σε αυτούς οφείλεται ...
Και αυτό είναι υπερβολικό. Οι στατιστικές δείχνουν οτι οι αλλοδαποί ευθύνονται περίπου για το 30% των παραβάσεων που έγιναν τα τελευταία χρόνια. Είναι άδικο να βάζουμε ταμπέλες σε χιλιάδες τίμιους ανθρώπους, για τα εγκλήματα κάποιων άλλων. Μην ξεχνάμε ποτέ οτι για κάθε αλλοδαπό που συλλαμβάνεται να παρανομεί, υπάρχουν χιλιάδες άλλοι, οι οποίοι την ίδια ώρα δουλεύουν για να ζήσουν τις οικογένειές τους. Δεν πρέπει αυτοί να γίνονται θύματα της προκατάληψής μας. Άλλωστε λύση σε αυτό το πρόβλημα, δεν αποτελούν η περιθωριοποίηση και η μεροληψία σε βάρος των αλλοδαπών, αλλά η ενσωμάτωση τους, η πλήρης ένταξύ τους στην κοινωνία μας, η βελτίωση της καθημερινότητας τους.

Δεν είμαι εγώ ο ρατσιστής, αλλά δεν καταλαβαίνω τι προσφέρουν όλοι αυτοί οι ξένοι που ζουν εδώ.
Πολλά! Καταρχάς οι εργαζόμενοι μετανάστες έχουν δώσει "ανάσα" και στα ασφαλιστικά ταμεία! Απο τους 1.900.000 ασφαλισμένους στο ΙΚΑ, οι 500.000 είναι αλλοδαποί. Σε μια περίοδο που λόγω μείωσης του εργατικού δυναμικού και υπογεννητικότητας μεγαλώνει η ψαλίδα ασφαλισμένων και συνταξιούχων, με σοβαρές οικονομικές συνέπειες στο ασφαλιστικό σύστημα, η παρουσία ξένων μεταναστών είναι παραπάνω απο ευεργετική. Όλα τα αρμόδια ινστιτούτα αναφέρουν οτι οι οικονομικοί μετανάστες, ιδίως απο τις γειτονικές χώρες, αποτέλεσαν σημαντικό αναπτυξιακό παράγοντα για τη χώρα μας. 200.000 μετανάστες έχουν ανοίξει τραπεζικούς λογαριασμούς, με συνολικό ύψος καταθέσεων 3 δις ευρώ! Απο άλλες έρευνες, έχει προκύψει οτι το 36% των μεταναστών σχεδιάζει να παραμείνει στην Ελλάδα. Οι άνθρωποι αυτοί έχουν ταυτίσει το μέλλον τους με την χώρα μας. Έχουν επιλέξει να δώσουν στα παιδιά τους ελληνική παιδεία, να προσφέρουν στην πατρίδα μας όπως κάνουμε και εμείς.

Πάντως όπως και να το κάνουμε δεν είμαστε όλοι ίδιοι ...

Ασφαλώς και δεν είμαστε ίδιοι. Είμαστε όμως ίσοι απέναντι στους νόμους και έχουμε τα ίδια δικαιώματα. Δυστυχώς, αυτό πολλές φορές το ξεχνάμε στην κοινωνία μας. Κι αυτό δεν έχει να κάνει μόνο με τη στάση μας απέναντι στους οικονομικούς μετανάστες, αλλά σε κάθε κοινωνική ομάδα που αποτελεί μειονότητα. Η Ελλάδα υστερεί σε σχέση με κάθε άλλη χώρα της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης, σε υποδομές που διευκολύνουν την καθημερινή ζωή των ατόμων με αναπρίες (ΑμεΑ). Οι Έλληνες (σύμφωνα με το Ευρωβαρόμετρο) είναι απο τους λιγότερο ανεκτικούς Ευρωπαίους σε θέματα ομοφυλοφιλίας και ιδιαίτερου σεξουαλικού προσανατολισμού. Ακόμα και όσοι έχουν δοιφορετικά θρησκευτικά πιστεύω, συχνά αντιμετωπίζουν προκαταλήψεις. Αυτές τις προκαταλήψεις πρέπει να ξεπεράσει η κοινωνία μας - ή τουλάχιστον η γενιά μας. Ας σκεφτούμε οτι ακόμα και κάθε φορά που αναπαράγουμε με ευκολία κάποιο αρνητικό στερεότυπο, αδικούμε, μειώνουμε και προσβάλουμε κάποιους ανθρώπους, χωρίς κανένα απολύτως λόγο.

Εξομολογήσεις ...

Οι άνθρωποι είναι πολύ περίεργα όντα. Ή μάλλον πολύ αδύναμα. Όλοι έχουμε κάποια standarts, κάποιες ηθικές αξίες που λέμε πως δεν θα τις παραβούμε. Όμως οι "υποθετικές" καταστάσεις στις οποίες υποβάλουμε τους εαυτούς μας για να καταλήξουμε σε αυτές τις αρχές δεν έχουν καμμία ή ελάχιστη σχέση με την πραγματικότητα. Κανείς δεν ξέρει που μπορεί να φτάσει αν δεν δοκιμαστεί, αν δεν του σκάσει η κακιά στιγμή που λένε.

Κατέληξα σε αυτό το συμπέρασμε κρίνοντας ένα διαθέσιμο πειραματόζωο - εμένα. Το καλοκαίρι (όταν έπεσαν οι δημοσιεύσεις σε αυτό το ημερολόγιο) βρήκα μια δουλειά. Ήμουν receptionist σε ένα ξενοδοχείο στον Άλιμο και ναί ήταν ζευγαράδικό. Το αφεντικό απο την αρχή με αντιπάθησε. Δεν ξέρω ακριβώς γιατί αλλά πάντοτε είχα την αίσθηση οτι με έβλεπε με μισό μάτι. Ρωτούσα τις συναδέλφους μου που ήταν παλαιότερες εαν έκανα καλά την δουλειά μου, μήπως όντως τον ζημίωνα οπότε δικαιολογημένα με αντιπαθούσε αλλά με διαβεβαίωναν οτι δεν ήταν έτσι. Τις ρωτούσα επίσης εαν το αφεντικό πάντα είναι τόσο εριστικό και γενικότερα αντιπαθητικό (pain in the neck είναι η σωστή αγγλική έκφραση) ή εαν ήταν έτσι μόνο μαζί μου και άλλαζαν το θέμα.

Έμεινα εκεί τέσσερις μήνες, όσο δηλαδή να βρει και να εκπαιδεύσει μια αντικαταστάτριά μου. Μετά με έδιωξε. Και δεν έφτανε μόνο αυτό. Ο μισθός που μου επισήμανε ως "τα νόμιμα" ήταν κατα 110 ευρώ χαμηλότερος απο τα κανονικά, επιπλέον είχα υπογράψει χαρτί της παραίτησής μου και ένα ακόμα που έλεγε οτι είχα αποζημιωθεί πλήρως και δεν είχα άλλες απαιτήσεις απο την εταιρεία. Ήξερα τι υπέγραφα (δεν ήξερα για τον μισθό) αλλά εαν δεν το έκανα δεν θα με προσλάμβανε ποτέ.

Το θέμα είναι αλλού. Όταν βρέθηκα χωρίς δουλειά Χριστουγεννιάτικα και κατάλαβα πόσο πολύ με είχε εκμεταλλευτεί και χρησιμοποιήσει, το παλιοτόμαρο, άρχισα να κάνω περίεργες και επικύνδυνες σκέψεις. Σκέψεις που δεν θα φανταζόμουν ποτέ οτι ήμουν ικανή να κάνω. Ας πούμε ευχόμουν συχνά να 1) του επιτεθούν ληστές και να τον κάνουν μαύρο στο ξύλο, 2) βρω το αυτοκίνητό του και να το κάνω χάλια με τα κλειδιά μου, 3) τον πιάσει η εφορία και του το κλείσει το μαγαζί (κόβαμε περίπου το 1/3 απο τις αποδείξεις που έπρεπε κανονικά να κόβουμε) και γενικά άλλα πολύ πιο τρομερά και τρομακτικά πράγματα. Μέχρι που έβλεπα στο ύπνο μου οτι τον σκότωνα - και μ'άρεσε.

Ξέρω οτι για τους περισσότερους αυτά θα φαίνονται αστεία ή φυσιολογικά, αλλά δεν είναι για μένα. Δεν μου έχει ξανασυμβεί κάτι τέτοιο. Πάντοτε πίστευα πως δεν ήμουν άνθρωπος της εκδίκησης. Νόμιζα οτι θα μπορούσα να το προσπεράσω πιο εύκολα. Νόμιζα οτι οι "καλοί άνθρωποι", και σ'αυτή την κατηγορία έβαζα και τον εαυτό μου, δεν αντιμετωπίζουν τους άλλους με τέτοιο τρόπο ακόμα και όταν τους χρειάζεται. Όμως έκανα λάθος. Εαν έφτασα σε αυτό το σημείο για κάτι τόσο απλό όπως 300 - 400 ευρώ και μια απόλυση τι θα είχα κάνει εαν κάποιος με είχε βλάψει πραγματικά? Η όλη εμπειρία με δίδαξε κάτι για τον εαυτό, αλλά ειλικρινά ήταν ένα μάθημα που θα προτιμούσα να μην είχα πάρει.

5 + 1 Πράγματα που δεν ξέρετε για μένα

Κανονικά υπάρχουν χιλιάδες και χιλιάδες πράγματα που δεν ξέρετε και δεν θα σας ενδιέφερε να μάθετε για μένα αλλά μιας που με προσκάλεσε η φίλη μου η Γκρινιάρα (ξέρω και το κανονικό της όνομα αλλά δεν σας το λέω) θα γράψω κι εγώ κάτι.

1) Δεν ξεκίνησα το κάπνισμα γιατί είμαι τσιγγούνα. Το θεωρώ πέταμα χρημάτων και ειλικρινα δεν μπορώ να καταλάβω τους καπνιστές που ενώ δεν έχουν να φάνε (που λέει ο λόγος) τρέχουν σαν παλαβοί να αγοράσουν τσιγάρα.

2) Δεν μου αρέσει το ανθρακικό. Με ενοχλέι στην γλώσσα. Είμαι 28 χρονών και δεν έχω πιεί ποτέ μου coka cola ή άλλα παρόμοια σκευάσματα. Προσπάθησα αλλά ποτέ δεν μπορούσα να κατεβάσω πάνω απο 1 - 2 γουλιές.

3) Στο σχολείο ήμουν ο χαρακτηριστικός τύπος σπασίκλα (χωρίς παρέες, που δεν έβγαινε πολύ και φόραγα και γυαλιά) αλλά χωρίς τους βαθμούς. Το πλήρες δράμα δηλαδή ...

4) Συχαίνομαι τα τηλεφωνήματα. Μόνο που σκέφτομαι οτι θα σηκώσω το τηλέφωνο για να καλέσω οποιονδήποτε (απο πιθανό εργοδότη για συνέντευξη μέχρι φίλους και γνωστούς για να κανονίσουμε έξοδο) με πιάνει ένας ανεξήγητος πανικός. Δεν ξέρω γιατί. Βλέπω την συσκευή και ενώ ξέρω πως πρέπει οπωσδήποτε να καλέσω στο μυαλό μου ξεπετάγονται χιλιάδες λόγοι για να μην το κάνω (και τις πιο πολλές φορές δεν το κάνω).

5) Στο σινεμά πηγαίνω συνήθως μόνη μου. Για έναν ανεξήγητο λόγο πολλόι λίγοι γνωστοί μου θέλουν να έρθουν στο κινηματογράφο μαζί μου. Δεν είναι οτι μιλάω πολύ (δεν μιλάω καθόλου). Μάλλον η θεματολογία φταίει. Μου αρέσουν οι περιπέτειες, οι ταινίες τρόμου και τα ιστορικά films και σε όλες τις γνωστές μου αρέσουν κάτι σαχλοκωμωδίες και κάτι κοινωνικά και άλλα βαρετά, οπότε πολύ νωρίς το πήρα απόφαση και πηγαίνω στο σινεμά χωρίς παρέα. Πρέπει να είμαι το μόνο άτομα σε όλη την επικράτεια που το κάνει αυτό, στο ταμείο όλοι ζητάνε απο 2 εισητήρια και πάνω.

5 + 1) Η διατροφή μου δεν είναι καθόλου μα καθόλου ισοροπημένη. Είμαι αποκλειστικά και μόνο κρεατοφάγος. Λαχανικά και φρούτα απλά δεν μπαίνουν στο στόμα μου. Το ξέρω πως δεν είναι σωστό. Το ξέρω πως χάνω ένα σωρό βιταμίνες. Το ξέρω πως θα έχω πρόβλημα αργότερα και πολλά άλλα, δεν μπορώ όμως να αλλάξω διατροφικές συνήθειες.

Τα βιβλία... ταξιδεύουν

Περισσότερα από εκατό βιβλία, αφημένα σε πάρκα, πλατείες, παγκάκια, τηλεφωνικούς θαλάμους και αλλού, περιμένουν να γνωρίσουν τον επόμενο αναγνώστη τους στη Θεσσαλονίκη. Tα άφησαν τις προηγούμενες μέρες «βιβλιοαπελευθερωτές» από όλη την Eλλάδα και το εξωτερικό, μέλη της παγκόσμιας ανοιχτής βιβλιοθήκης «bookcrossing» που είχαν το πρώτο πανελλήνιο συνέδριό τους την περασμένη εβδομάδα στην πόλη.

Mε σύνθημα «απελευθερώστε τα βιβλία και αφήστε τα να ταξιδέψουν ελεύθερα», περισσότεροι από 450.000 bookcrossers σε 130 χώρες του κόσμου έχουν «απελευθερώσει» τα τελευταία πέντε χρόνια πάνω από 3 εκατ. βιβλία και παρακολουθούν ηλεκτρονικά το «ταξίδι» τους, μέσω της ιστοσελίδας της πρωτοβουλίας www.bookcrossing.com.

Στην Eλλάδα, η ιδέα εξαπλώνεται με γοργούς ρυθμούς το τελευταίο διάστημα και σήμερα τα μέλη της πιο πρωτότυπης παγκόσμιας βιβλιοθήκης είναι 1.460, ενώ αποκτά όλο και περισσότερους υποστηρικτές.

Mε ευκαιρία την πρώτη πανελλήνια συνάντηση των bookcrossers, το νέο μεταδόθηκε από στόμα σε στόμα στη Θεσσαλονίκη, η οποία βρέθηκε αυτές τις μέρες στο επίκεντρο των υποστηρικτών της πρωτοβουλίας. Eίναι χαρακτηριστικό ότι από τα 249 «ελεύθερα» βιβλία που ήταν καταχωρημένα χθες στην ελληνική σελίδα του site, τα 103 βρίσκονταν στη Θεσσαλονίκη, την ώρα που στην Aθήνα αναζητούσαν τον επόμενο αναγνώστη 28 βιβλία και άλλα 14 σε ολόκληρη την Aττική.

H 27χρονη Xριστίνα μπήκε τυχαία στο «κλαμπ» των bookcrossers, όταν πριν από λίγες μέρες βρήκε τη «Δίκη» του Kάφκα σε ένα σταντ με εφημερίδες στην παραλιακή λεωφόρο της Θεσσαλονίκης. «Mε άφησαν εδώ για να βρω νέους αναγνώστες», έγραφε ένα χαρτάκι κολλημένο στο εξώφυλλο, ενώ όταν γύρισε σελίδα η έκπληξή της ήταν μεγαλύτερη. Eνα αυτοκόλλητο της πρωτοβουλίας και ένα χειρόγραφο του προηγούμενου κατόχου την ενημέρωναν για το πώς βρέθηκε το βιβλίο στα χέρια της και της ζητούσαν να το «ξεχάσει» κι αυτή με τη σειρά της κάπου μόλις το διαβάσει. «Tο βρίσκω συναρπαστικό», είπε στο «Eθνος» και έσπευσε να γίνει κι αυτή bookcrosser, ενημερώνοντας παράλληλα μέσω του site τον προηγούμενο κάτοχο ότι το βιβλίο του είναι σε ασφαλή χέρια.

«Θα το διαβάσω και θα το αφήσω στο τρένο, ώστε να συνεχίσει το ταξίδι του, ενώ θα δώσω και δικά μου βιβλία στην παγκόσμια βιβλιοθήκη», πρόσθεσε.

Πως γίνεται το bookcrossing
Για να συμμετάσχει κανείς, αρκεί να μπει στο www.bookcrossing. com, να γράψει τον τίτλο του βιβλίου που θέλει να «απελευθερώσει» και το σημείο όπου το έχει «ξεχάσει».

Παίρνει έναν μοναδικό κωδικό, τον οποίο γράφει πάνω στο βιβλίο, μαζί με μια σημείωση που να ενημερώνει τον επόμενο αναγνώστη. Eκείνος που θα το αναζητήσει από τις οδηγίες στο Iντερνετ ή θα το βρει τυχαία στο δρόμο μπαίνει με τη σειρά του στο site και γράφει τον κωδικό του βιβλίου, ενημερώνοντας τον προηγούμενο κάτοχο ότι είναι σε καλά χέρια. Oταν θα το διαβάσει, κάνει κι αυτός το ίδιο, παρακολουθώντας με τη σειρά του το υπόλοιπο «ταξίδι» του βιβλίου. Tο bookcrossing ξεκίνησε το 2001 στις HΠA, από μια ιδέα του Pον Xορνμπέικερ, που ίδρυσε το site. Πέντε χρόνια μετά, η ιδέα ξεπέρασε τα σύνορα των HΠA, πέρασε στην Eυρώπη και 130 χώρες του κόσμου, ενώ οι «βιβλιοαπελευθερωτές» έφτασαν τους 468.149 (σύμφωνα με την τελευταία καταμέτρηση του περασμένου Mαϊου), οι οποίοι έχουν καταχωρήσει συνολικά 3.043.701 βιβλία.

Όλος ο κόσμος μία μεγάλη βιβλιοθήκη

Πόσες φορές δεν έχουμε διαβάσει ένα βιβλίο έχοντας την αίσθηση ότι μας αγγίζει και θέλουμε να το μοιραστούμε με κάποιον; Με το bookcrossing τα βιβλία αγγίζουν πιο πολλούς ανθρώπους και προσφέρουν την ίδια συγκίνηση σε πιο πολλούς αναγνώστες.Από την άλλη, είναι κρίμα να αφήνουμε τα βιβλία που διαβάζουμε ξεχασμένα σε ένα ράφι να σκονίζονται χωρίς ποτέ πιθανόν να τα ξαναδιαβάσουμε. Αντί λοιπόν να αφήνουμε κάποια βιβλία στις βιβλιοθήκες μας, γιατί δεν τα ελευθερώνουμε; Τα βιβλία, λένε οι bookcrossers, δεν πρέπει να σκονίζονται στα ράφια. Αν τα αγαπάς, πρέπει να φροντίσεις να κυκλοφορούν. Διάβασέ τα, καταχώρισέ τα (αξιολόγησέ τα) και απελευθέρωσέ τα. Read-Register-Release, λέει το σύνθημά τους.Το Bookcrossing είναι ένα κίνημα απελευθέρωσης βιβλίων που απευθύνεται σε όλους τους λάτρεις της ανάγνωσης και συνδυάζει την περιπέτεια, την ανιδιοτέλεια και τη λογοτεχνία σε ένα μοναδικό μίγμα, το οποίο οι βιβλιόφιλοι βρίσκουν ακαταμάχητο. Το σκεπτικό είναι να απελευθερώνεις βιβλία σε παγκάκια, καφετέριες κ.λπ. και μετά να παρακολουθείς ηλεκτρονικά, μέσω της σχετικής ιστοσελίδας, το ταξίδι που κάνουν περνώντας από τον έναν αναγνώστη στον άλλο.Τα μέλη του κινήματος στη Λάρισα Δημ. Ανδράζης και Εύη Μπατικά επισημαίνουν ότι η διαδικασία είναι αρκετά απλή: Αφού διαλέξει κάποιος τα βιβλία που θέλει να «ταξιδέψουν», τα καταχωρίζει στην ιστοσελίδα www.bookcrossing.com, έτσι ώστε κάθε βιβλίο να αποκτήσει τα δικό του κωδικό αριθμό (αριθμός BCID). Αυτόν τον κωδικό τον σημειώνει στο εσωτερικό του εξωφύλλου, ώστε όποιος το βρει να μπορεί μέσω της ιστοσελίδας να μάθει ή να γράψει σχόλια γι’ αυτό. Έπειτα, το αφήνει στην επίσημη ζώνη απελευθέρωσης βιβλίων , σ’ ένα παγκάκι, στη στάση του λεωφορείου, στο καφέ, στο σχολείο ή οπουδήποτε θέλει. Έτσι το βιβλίο ξεκινάει το ταξίδι του, με άγνωστο προορισμό, αλλά με ενδιαφέρουσες στάσεις. Όταν κάποιος βρει το βιβλίο μπαίνει στην ίδια σελίδα και συμπληρώνει τον κωδικό του βιβλίου, δηλώνει πού το βρήκε και βλέπει πού ήταν πριν, ποιοι το διάβασαν και ποια ήταν η γνώμη τους. Στη συνέχεια το διαβάζει και το αφήνει ελεύθερο ώστε να συνεχίσει το ταξίδι του σε νέους αναγνώστες! Η ιστοσελίδα του bookcrossing είναι μόνο στα Αγγλικά. Παρ’ όλα αυτά, υπάρχει φόρουμ στα Ελληνικά, όπου οι Έλληνες χρήστες μπορούν να γράψουν στη γλώσσα τους, να συζητούν και να αλληλοβοηθούνται.Η ιδέα του bookcrossing γεννήθηκε το Μάρτιο του 2001 στην Αμερική και λίγο αργότερα έγινε γεγονός. Τον Μάρτιο του 2002, με ένα ολοσέλιδο ρεπορτάζ στο περιοδικό «Book», έγινε παγκοσμίως γνωστό, με αποτέλεσμα να γράφονται καθημερινά περίπου 200 νέα μέλη.Ο κ. Ανδράζης υπογραμμίζει ότι στην Ελλάδα υπάρχουν 2.000 μέλη περίπου του bookcrossing, κατέχοντας τη 17η θέση στον κόσμο. Ελληνικές επίσημες ζώνες απελευθέρωσης βιβλίων υπάρχουν στη Λάρισα, την Αθήνα, τη Θεσσαλονίκη, τη Βέροια, τα Χανιά και την Κω. Στην πόλη μας αριθμούνται αυτή τη στιγμή περίπου 25 εγγεγραμμένα μέλη, ενώ η επίσημη ζώνη απελευθέρωσης βιβλίων είναι το καφέ Starbucks στην πλατεία Ταχυδρομείου. Είναι ένα μέρος στο οποίο μπορούν όλοι οι φίλοι του Bookcrossing και των βιβλίων να αφήσουν και να πάρουν βιβλία, βοηθώντας τα έτσι στο ταξίδι τους.Η κ. Μπατικά τονίζει ότι εκτός από τη συνήθη διαδρομή του bookcrossing, υπάρχουν και κάποιες επιμέρους. Είναι αρχικά το bookring, κατά το οποίο δημιουργείται από την αρχή μία λίστα ονομάτων, στα οποία θα πάει το βιβλίο, ενώ στο τέλος θα επιστρέψει στον κάτοχό του. Αντίθετα η διαδικασία του bookray περιλαμβάνει λίστα αναγνωστών του βιβλίου, αλλά χωρίς επιστροφή στον κάτοχο.Όσοι θέλουν περισσότερες πληροφορίες μπορούν να απευθυνθούν στον κ.
