If this sounds a tad abstract, think of it this way: the geographic features and resources around you have strongly influenced your country’s economy, as well as how it has fared in the many wars that have been fought throughout history.

These blinks look at six of the most fascinating and influential geographies around the globe. More often than you may think, the decisions made by world leaders have a lot to do with the lay of the land. Sometimes, these leaders and the people they represent turn out to be prisoners of geography.

In these blinks, you’ll find out

about the one part of the world Vladimir Putin obsesses over the most;

why China refuses to let go of Tibet; and

why the African continent has struggled to capitalize on lucrative trade routes.

Key idea 1

Russia is an aggressive presence in the Baltics because it fears invasion from the West.

There’s no denying the fact that Russia is enormous. Covering a sprawling 6 million square miles and containing eleven different time zones, Russia is by far the world’s biggest country.

So what keeps Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia, tossing and turning at night? It’s one particular stretch of land that somewhat resembles a slice of pizza.

Beginning in Poland, this particular pizza-slice-shaped wedge extends southeast to the foot of the Ural Mountain range, and northeast to Russia’s capital city of Moscow.

What keeps Putin particularly worried is that this area of land is part of what’s called the North European Plain, which stretches from France across Belgium, the Netherlands, Northern Germany, Poland and ends at the Russian Urals. As the name suggests, this area is flat and makes the European gateway to Russia vulnerable and difficult to defend.

Any country within the North European Plain could conceivably send an army across the flatlands and directly into Moscow. As Putin knows all too well, this is exactly what has happened to Russia throughout its history.

During both world wars, this is the path the Germans took in their military campaigns. But that’s not all – since 1812, invaders from the Northern European Plain have attacked Russia an average of once every 33 years!

For generations now, Russia’s strategy for neutralizing the threat from the North European Plain has been to control Poland and all the Baltic states that lie between it and Russia, which include Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Belarus.

These are the nations that make up the meat of that pizza slice, so to speak. While the wedge stretches 2,000 miles from north to south at its easternmost section, it’s only 300 miles wide around Poland and the Baltic states. If Russia can station a strong defensive front here, it can more easily hold off potential Western invaders.

Unfortunately, this means the Baltic states are likely to continue having a rough go of it.

Key idea 2

China’s fears of Indian invasion and water shortages keep their grip on Tibet strong.

If you’re familiar with the history of Tibet, you know it’s been the site of an ongoing struggle for freedom from Chinese rule. It’s also one that has involved regular, though always shocking, acts of Tibetan monks setting themselves on fire to protest Chinese oppression. In 2008, 21 Tibetans died after protests turned especially violent.

There’s been no shortage of humanitarian pleas calling for an end to the occupation of Tibet. So why does China refuse to let go of Tibet?

The answer to this question lies just west of Tibet: India.

China and India are far and away the two most populous countries on the planet, so there’s tension over how ugly any major conflict between them could become. It is perhaps fortunate that there is a natural buffer zone between these two world powers in the form of the Himalayan mountains, which run along the western border of China. But this is unfortunate for Tibet, since it’s smack dab in the middle of this buffer zone.

Tibet’s homeland is the Tibetan Plateau, which is right next to the Himalayas, on China’s side of the divide. So, in the theoretical event of India sending an invading army over the Himalayas, they could occupy the Tibetan plateau and have a commanding position, looking down upon mainland China, from which they could launch their attack.

This is China’s primary strategic reason for occupying Tibet. If they don’t control it, they’re leaving the door open for India to take it and thereby leaving themselves extremely vulnerable.

However, there is another motive behind China’s actions: water.

Tibet has long held the nickname “China’s water tower,” since three of China’s main rivers – the Mekong, the Yellow River and the Yangtze – all have their sources in Tibet. So, not only would India have a superior offensive position in Tibet, if they occupied this area they could also cut off China’s main water supply.

As far as China is concerned, whether or not India would ever want to deprive China of water is irrelevant. The fact is that they could, and this is enough of a threat to China’s prosperity for them to continue occupying Tibet.

Key idea 3

Guns and geographical good fortune make the United States invulnerable.

If you were to think of the world in terms of real estate, which country do you think a realtor would hold in the highest regard? If you factor in things like good neighbors, water supplies and state-of-the-art security features, most real estate agents would put the United States of America on the top of their list.

Unlike most of the countries mentioned in these blinks, the United States has few concerns about traditional invasions.

The geographical position of the United States is unique in that it makes the country practically invulnerable to any invading army. Its only neighbors are Canada and Mexico, and they’re not just friendly, they’re also big enough that any invading army attempting to reach the United States by going through these countries would have to establish impossibly long supply lines.

Perhaps the best protection the United States has working in its favor are the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, which border the country’s west and east coasts, respectively. This effectively cuts off the east and the west from attacks, since any invading force would have to contend with an entire, volatile ocean before even reaching its target.

As for the state-of-the-art security system – well, how does 100,000,000 loaded guns sound?

The United States’ lenient gun laws have resulted in every small town having the potential to take up arms and immediately defend itself from invasion without any help from the federal government. This is a country with the right to bear arms written into its social fabric, so guns are within easy reach for millions of Americans.

Any invading force would have a new set of armed civilians in every Springfield and Sunnydale they come across.

Key idea 4

Geography has blessed northern Europe and blighted its south.

Thanks to the Enlightenment and the Industrial Revolution, Europe has hugely contributed to the modern world, for better or for worse. This isn’t just happenstance; it’s due in large part to Europe’s temperate climate, generous rainfall and fertile soil, all of which helped build thriving societies.

Due to geography, however, some areas of Europe have thrived more than others.

In 2012, when the Eurozone crisis was at its peak, nasty stereotypes began appearing in German media with increasing frequency, in attempts to explain why some regions of Europe were experiencing such a severe economic downturn.

In particular, these generalizations portrayed northern Europeans as industrious hard workers, and southern Europeans as a bunch of lazy slackers. But rather than being attributable to work ethic, the true reason for the struggles of some southern European countries lies in geography.

The same Northern European Plain that haunts Russia has provided France, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands with fertile soil and a wealth of productive crops. As a result, they’re the nations associated with hard work and money. And with a surplus of crops and goods to trade, northern Europe became home to bustling cities of commerce and major urban hubs.

In contrast, countries in southern Europe have far less arable land.

Greece, for example, doesn’t have enough fertile land to be a major agricultural exporter, and this also means that the country can only develop a small handful of those major cities of commerce that are so abundant in the north. It's in these cities, like London and Hamburg, where you’ll find the highly educated and skilled workers that drive forward modern economies.

Unfortunately for southern European nations like Greece, geography still plays a major factor in its well-being and political future.

Key idea 5

Geography has given Africa beautiful but impractical waterways.

The relationship Africa has with its oceans and waterways is a complex and frustrating one, and this isn’t just as a result of its vast deserts. Africa is home to some of the world’s most stunning beaches and coastlines, as well as legendary rivers. But as we’ll see, African countries have been dealt a difficult hand when it comes to being able to use these waterways for commercial gain.

For starters, Africa’s picture-perfect coastline is all but useless when it comes to setting up harbors.

Unlike much of the jagged coastlines found along Europe and the United States, where the ocean sharply declines into deep waters that are perfect for docking boats, Africa’s shoreline is mostly smooth and shallow. This makes it impossible for cargo ships to load and unload goods for importing and exporting.

While this remains a problem, human ingenuity is starting to find a way around Africa’s problematic geography. Tanzania and Angola, for instance, have formed partnerships with China to start creating man-made deepwater harbors. In Tanzania, they’re using sheer brute force to expand the port of Bagamoyo so that it will eventually be able to load and unload 20 million containers of cargo each year, making it Africa’s biggest port.

But Africa’s challenges don’t end with the coastline. Moving inland, it’s Africa’s rivers that pose another geographical obstacle that has hindered trade.

The Zambezi River is one of the continent’s longest and most spectacular rivers. Its 1,600-mile waterway runs through six countries and is punctuated with whitewater rapids and breathtaking waterfalls, such as Victoria Falls. These stunning features may be great for adventurers, but they severely limit the river’s usefulness for transportation. Simply put, cargo ships and waterfalls don’t mix.

The impracticality of Africa’s rivers as useful trade routes has made both trade and contact between the continent’s different regions very limited. This has, in turn, significantly hindered economic development across the continent and prevented major trade routes from forming.

Key idea 6

Geography has gifted North Korea with hills, while there’s flat land in South Korea all the way to Seoul.

With the seemingly endless threats it poses to neighboring countries, North Korea is becoming a major headache – especially for South Korea. You may be wondering how this difficult arrangement has lasted so long and, once again, the answer lies in geography.

Even though South Korea has twice the population and 80 times the economic power of North Korea, not to mention having a superpower like the United States on its side, South Korea has remained the vulnerable one.

This is because of the hills and elevated terrain located along North Korea’s side of the border, which is located only 35 miles away from Seoul, South Korea’s capital city, where half of the country’s 50 million citizens live.

Within these hills, military experts estimate that North Korea has 10,000 weapons stashed, ready to fire 500,000 rounds into the city of Seoul within 60 minutes. So, if a conflict were to occur, South Korea knows that it would have to immediately contend with millions of civilians fleeing south from Seoul, while at the same time trying to create a strong defensive line in that area. It doesn’t take a strategic genius to recognize that this is a recipe for chaos.

Another geographic feature working against South Korea is that the 35 miles of land separating Seoul from North Korea are flat, making the hills along the North Korean side of the border even more dangerous.

Therefore, if North Korea were to launch a surprise attack, their army could move quite easily over the flat terrain and into the heart of the enemy’s capital city, landing a devastating blow. On the other hand, if South Korea were to launch a surprise attack, it would immediately hit a series of geographical speed bumps that would slow down ground troops and make them vulnerable to attack.

This is partly why these two opposing nations have remained in a political deadlock for over 50 years.

Final summary

Societies are inevitably shaped by the land upon which they exist. Natural resources and geographic features can provide safety and prosperity or leave a country’s citizens exposed and struggling. Geography has been a determining factor in the wars humans fight, as well as the speed of our economic development. Although modern technology now allows us to bend the rules of geography, it still remains crucial to understanding why nations have turned out the way they are today.

Suggested further reading: A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson

A Short History of Nearly Everything offers an enlightening summary of contemporary scientific thinking relating to all aspects of life, from the creation of the universe to our relationship with the tiniest of bacteria.

Dellaportahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09003497729798214874noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19693834.post-77819000051789659882022-12-22T15:19:00.003+00:002022-12-22T15:19:27.805+00:00Season' s Greetings54Seasons Greetings from Blue Orchid HotelsDellaportahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09003497729798214874noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19693834.post-87636069927854873362022-03-26T22:23:00.002+00:002022-03-26T22:23:49.389+00:0010 things that makes you happy
New books

Meeting with friends

Chocolate

Long walks

Super hero movies

Nando's

Crocheting

Sewing

Window shopping for homewares, furniture and stationary

Excursions
Dellaportahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09003497729798214874noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19693834.post-83867365258984398682022-02-19T16:15:00.001+00:002022-02-19T16:15:22.748+00:00Marathon to Athens - Challenge accepted

Dellaportahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09003497729798214874noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19693834.post-35202028374596608782022-02-04T14:02:00.004+00:002022-02-04T14:07:28.514+00:00Second Nature Programme
So in my quest to be healthier in 2022, I joined the Second Nature progrmme. My goal is to get some much needed help/inspiration to change my lifestyle. The past 3 - 4 years I gained aroud 20 extra kilos that I need to shed. Hopefully I will be (a) thinner so I can fit my clother (b) more energetic instead of tired all of te time. I also aim to do things I used to do quite easily, like walking medium distanes without huffing and puffing every 10 minutes and carrying shopping like a regular adult.

The problems I anticipate facing:

After a quick view of the handbook, I realise I will have to give up on most of the things I love: Coffee - Chocolate - Pasta. I will have to start eating vegetables but not potatoes which I have avoided for 43 years and my beloved premade sauses which were a staple in my cooking. White rice is also out, I will need to go buy brown rice for the first time in my life. At least I get to keep cheese.

I know myself and I know I will struggle. I was never great in the kitchen. Most of the recipies are things I would never eat normally and will have to press myself to eat. Also I already have supplies in my pantry that I have not used! I cannot just throw them away. Also I will have to stop eating the free lunch/dinner at work as most of the things offered do not fit the bill!

I am highly sceptical of the whole thing but then again I knew my eating habits will need to change, what I didn't realise was that this means sacrificing my time and income as well. The healthy alternatives to pasta - chocolate - potatoes etc are much more expensive.

My mantra is 'Aim for the moon. Even if you miss you'll still land among the stars'. In my case even if I get half of it right, I will still be better of than before.

Any advise is appreciated. Wish me luck and perseverence. I will need it.

Dellaportahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09003497729798214874noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19693834.post-36079325282025407052022-01-29T13:37:00.002+00:002022-02-19T16:15:43.645+00:00The English Channel challenge - Accepted

Dellaportahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09003497729798214874noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19693834.post-78376023805184768112021-11-16T10:32:00.004+00:002021-11-16T10:32:39.175+00:00Περι παιδεραστίας @GracePapa2

Άμα μαθαίνατε ότι υπάρχει κάποιος που σκοτώνει παιδεραστές θα θέλατε να τον πιάσουν;

This year I will read a lot of graphic novels. I have read a few already but I want to become a serious manga/comic reader already. I do not have a list prepared as I am a newbie and don't even know what I like but the list will appear here and I will be writing reviews at goodreads for everything I read.

The horror/agony scenes are very realistic. Reading the book I realised that all of the languages used to describe 'the others' have been used by colonizers before. They are savages, they have no respect for human life (correction they have no respect for people like us i.e homo sapiens and why should they?) they are literally evil. So we are justified in marching with our armies and killing them while 'exploring' and benefit from the hidden wealth we might discover. And don't tell me that this wouldn't be the case; Americans marched on Iraq for their oil - oops sorry I meant to protect themselves against the non-existent nuclear bombs the Iraqis had. Does that sound familiar? The pilgrims saved native Americans so much that only 5 million of them survive. The British brought civilization to India; the best Briton of all times, Winston Churchill was responsible for more than 2 million deaths by famine. And don't get me started on how King Leopold treated people of Kongo.

The only way colonizers felt empathy for those other than themselves was when the 'others' suffered the trials of Job. Look at Uncle Thomas hut. It's thinly veiled torture porn. So this other species murders our kind at will. Our guns and technology can't help us. Well, they must be fallen angels and evil reincarnate for not wanting us to colonize them and treat them like we have all the 'others' before grudgingly accepting that they are humans too and might deserve human rights. Therefore we will exploit them in different ways, via economic sanctions etc. Oops, we cannot do that because they are a bunch of homicidal maniacs that are going to eat us, literally. Well, good for them. I am rooting for the devil this time.

The scientists above ground are looking for the leader of the Handals - Satan - above the ground. Ok, this story has officially been derailed. I think the whole Satan story arc could have been omitted.

They are stipped in misery and poverty. The book is very engaging and the language is simple and easy to follow but, oh my God. The story is heartbreaking. The sad and disturbing thing is that if you replace paranormal wolfishness with drug and alcohol addiction, the story wouldn't change much. The family is practically illiterate and destitute. Moves around all the time due to illegal shit they have to pull to survive and there is no end in sight. There is no 'good choice' that the protagonist can make that will change his fate. Their misery is so deep and so complete - we are talking about generation upon generation of semi-existing - that they cannot even fathom a way out. They are unloved and unwanted and thoroughly desperate all the times. I have a suspicion that werewolfism is just a metaphor for being native American and If that is true, holy shit the crimes committed against them by the world are terrible.

It explores an interesting theme: life in modern Indian reservations. To describe it in one word: depressing. I have read before that alcohol and drug addiction are a major problem in Indigenous communities and that is clearly evident in this book as well. To top it all up the protagonist of the story is gay and rather unfortunate in love. He lives in a small and rather isolated town/village and most of the partners he discovers are surprise, surprice, closeted. All in all I liked it but it wasn't a great book. It could have been but it was not. If I had to recommend a book by an indegenous author, it wouldn't be this one.

Freshwater by Akwaeke Emezi
This book was written by an indigenous writer, just not an American. It is extremely confusing and weird. It feels like the girl/woman life is a dream. There are these spirits who posses her for luck of a better word. They are many and they are hungry. She is trying to have a normal life but they will not let her. This book is difficult to read. Not because of the language but because it depicts the internal life of someone who is insane. The doctors would have a different term it would probably be depressed and suicidal tendencies due to molestation and abuse during childhood but the end is the same.

The Marrow Thieves by Cherie Dimaline
Wow just wow. This book was out of this world. It was full of cruelty and hearbreak but at the same time it was a story of resilience and courage. It's a dystopian world where indegenous people are treated like property but this is the 2nd round of terror. What I mean by that is that the atrocities described in the book have already happened once. They are not new. This makes the story even more horifying. Canadians, you suck!

How I became a ghost by Tim Tingle
How is this a children's book?!? I admit that as a Greek woman I was only vaguely aware of the trail of tears but how is this a children's book. People drop dead right, left and center. Am I the only one who wants bad things to happen to the soldiers? Like awfully bad? Well, I am pretty sure that their grandchildren are the same people who refuse to wear a mask so they are spreading covid19, so not much has changed. *Spoiler* this is a story about a 10 year old who dies literaly and becomes a ghost. I do not know wwhy I thought it was a metaphore; it's right there on the title, but still.

Here is a phrase that struck me: That's when I realized for the first time that the soldiers couldn't hurt me. I was already dead! Maybe being a ghost wasn't so bad after all.

What? WHAT???? He is TEN. Don't get me wrong you absolutely must read this book just be prepared to cry.

Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse
This book is marvellous. The characters are well thought out and the story is fast-paced but we still learn a lot about the protagonists. **Spoiler alert: The revenge that Serapio is after is not only well deserved but timely as well.** I liked that there was a bisexual character but I mostly liked the way the author approached the subject. These days it is 'fashionable' to prove how forward-thinking you are by adding an LGTBQ+ character just for the sake of publicity (we are looking at you, JK Rowling). This is not the case here.

The book was written by an indigenous author and is based on native American folklore but I only knew this because I read it in other reviews; otherwise I wouldn't have realised it at all. My only problem is that the bok has just been released and it's a trilogy and I don't know how long I will have to wait for the next instalment (probably a year or so)

Heartbeat braves by Pamela Sanderson
I was quite disappointed; The book was kind of boring. My rating: 4 of 5 stars

#SpookyBitchesBookClub

This book was part of the October 2020 group read however I have read it in April 2019 and I didn't bother re-reading it. I remember it had a very interesting premise and I liked it because it was not shallow and childish like some young adult fiction I have read. It dealt with very mature themes like abuse etc and didn't focus on the boyfriend-girlfriend relationship. The twist was not very unexpected but as a whole, I found it to be a very interesting read.

It was a little bit slow passed at
first, we are introduced to the main characters for the first 150

condensed - but once the cruise starts the action is pretty fast. The
end was a little bit sudden too. The whole story wraps up in the last 40
pages. It is not the Great American Novel and I have read spookier
books. It is an easy read and I would recommend it to people who love
both action and horror genres.

Quotes from the book

The Atargatis hadn’t found the mermaids through a free and open exchange

I mean really angry. I was born and raised in Greece that happens to be 20 years behind everything so I am happy to report that I did not have to face the challenges today's kids are facing. Sexting and nude photos between high - schoolers was not a thing in the '90s. Also, porn was not so readily available, so that was a huge advantage. I have reached the 'invisibility years' - I am 41 as we speak - but my heart goes out to all those who struggle.

Just know this: We are here for you. We are watching.

I know the author thinks she is hilarious but really she is just annoying. The premise of the book is interesting enough but the execution is awful. Why did I read it then? Well, I started it and I thought it would get better. Also, I have a book challenge to finish and have I mentioned I was hoping it would get better. I was wrong. Maybe I read it all at once. Maybe if I read only one challenge at the time it would feel different. Or maybe it simply sucks. Do not waste your time on this book. Hovering about the door of the bookshop in the Suffolk town of Aldeburgh, they wait to be invited in. “Can I look at the cards?” a woman whispers, as if enquiring about contraband. A man spends several minutes forensically scrubbing his hands with sanitiser gel before wrestling on a pair of latex gloves. “I’m going to have to buy something now,” he quips. But once inside, the customers pootle absent-mindedly with no regard for the marked-out route, hunting for that paperback they heard about on the radio, something for the grandkids or just a bloody good yarn. Mary James, who owns the shop with her husband John, smiles indulgently. “People are finding the one-way system quite challenging,” she concedes.

England’s high streets, which were closed for nearly three months, are slowly returning to life. Bookshops and other stores deemed “non-essential” were permitted to reopen on June 15th. Almost all branches of Waterstones, a big chain, did so. Roughly half of England’s several hundred independent booksellers—including the Aldeburgh Bookshop—opened straight away. A steady flow of customers are returning. “It’s not like Primark,” Mrs James tells a customer over the phone, alluding to pictures of snaking queues outside a clothing retailer. “But there are people.”

That is welcome after a nervy start to the year for bookshops, which hardly make bumper profits even in boom years. The Jameses are typical: they furloughed their “four-and-a-half” employees at the start of lockdown and dispatched mail orders themselves. Like many such shops, they expect to scrape through, but will keep a tight rein on spending for some time. James Daunt, who runs Waterstones, is also taking a cautious approach. In the first two days of trading, sales at the Crouch End branch were up year-on-year but were down by 80% at Hatchards, a posh shop owned by Waterstones in central London. Mr Daunt thinks that customers are keen to return to their local high street but are wary of travelling to city-centre branches.

Bookshops are used to existential crises. They got a head start in learning to compete with Amazon, which challenged booksellers before taking on the rest of the high street. “We’ve had 25 years of practice,” says Meryl Halls of the Booksellers Association, a trade group. “We’re battle-hardened. Some retailers are just going into that firestorm now.” The number of independent bookshops in Britain plummeted from 1,894 in 1995 to 867 in 2016. But in recent years more have been opening than closing; smart owners are tempting back customers with events, book groups and cafés. “I don’t think anybody has fallen out of love with Amazon,” says Mr Daunt. “The pressure was so extreme they’ve had to improve themselves. Good independents have become exceptionally good.”

Mr Daunt points to another advantage that booksellers have over other retailers: “We’re very fortunate that we’ve got something people want.” Clothes shops that closed in March are sitting on stockpiles of this season’s fashions that will soon be old hat. But books hardly age. And bookshops provide a sense of community and serendipity that cannot be replicated online. Shoppers in Aldeburgh who come in for Jeffrey Archer’s or Lee Child’s latest novel might go out with “The British Herring Industry: The Steam Drifter Years 1900-1960”.

Some come in on a mission (“I know what I want: ‘The Salt Path’”). But, for most, browsing is the point. One woman picks up a large haul, including the latest title for the local book group. “We had one very unsatisfactory Zoom meeting because everybody in the club likes to talk at once,” she says. They now meet outdoors. Your correspondent, who pledged to spend lockdown working through a backlog of unread doorstoppers, comes out with four novels (two of them recommendations) and a wallet £51 ($64) lighter. Perhaps they should have stayed shut after all.

Originally posted at The Economist
