This book was confusing, to say the least. The 'world' or 'society' or whatever you wanna call it, kept assigning labels to our protagonists - both the boy and the girl - for no reason at all. They were miserable 99% of the time because they were 'thinking too highly of themselves' although that was not the case and they had very few if any friends because they were 'not open enough'. The fact that the people around them were total jerks and undeserving assholes didn't factor in this at all.
In my opinion, being isolated means that yes you will be lonely at times but also bullies cannot get you. And that is the best outcome you can hope for.
